Modern Software Concepts for the Embedded World

Consulting for contemporary embedded development: clean code, modularity, testing, and maintainable architectures — concepts from modern software development, applied to the requirements of embedded systems.

Modern Software Concepts for the Embedded World
  1. 01

Embedded codebases often grow over years — historically evolved structures, tight hardware coupling, and little modularity turn every change into a risk. Automated tests are frequently missing entirely, with changes checked manually on the device. Concepts like clean code, clear layer separation, and test-driven development are well established in modern software development, but often haven't arrived in the embedded world yet. The result: high maintenance effort, difficult extensibility, and knowledge tied to individual people.

  2. 02

We brought modern software concepts into the existing embedded development — pragmatically adapted to the realities of embedded systems: clean-code principles and unified standards, a modular architecture with a clear separation between hardware abstraction and application logic, and defined interfaces for future extensions. Complemented by a multi-tier test strategy: unit tests for hardware-independent logic, integration tests against the hardware abstraction, and automated tests on the target platform. The transition happened incrementally within the running project, accompanied by reviews and targeted knowledge transfer to the team.

  3. 03

A codebase that's viable again: understandable, testable, and modularly extensible. Automated tests cover every change — regressions are caught before they reach the device. New features and hardware variants can be integrated with predictable effort, and changes stay locally contained. The team works to shared standards, and knowledge about the architecture is documented rather than tied to individuals.
