Safety-Critical Microcontroller Application with FreeRTOS

Safety-critical firmware on a microcontroller: FreeRTOS as the foundation, combined with modern software design and a consistently modular structure — for verifiability and long-term maintainability.

Safety-Critical Microcontroller Application with FreeRTOS
  1. 01

A safety-critical application on a microcontroller: the firmware has to work reliably and verifiably — deterministic timing behavior, defined error responses, and clear responsibilities in the code are mandatory. Classic embedded firmware with a monolithic structure and implicit dependencies doesn't meet these requirements: it makes review, testing, and safety verification equally difficult.

  2. 02

We developed the application on top of FreeRTOS — with an architecture that consistently applies modern software principles to the microcontroller: a strictly modular structure with clearly delineated components, defined interfaces between tasks, and a clean separation of safety-critical logic, hardware abstraction, and sequence control. Priorities, timing, and communication in the RTOS are explicitly designed and documented traceably — every component is testable in isolation.

  3. 03

Safety-critical firmware that combines both: deterministic behavior in operation and a structure that effectively supports reviews and safety verification. The modular structure confines changes to individual components, new features can be added in a controlled way — a viable foundation across the entire product lifecycle.
